The pH values in fresh rabbit semen are quite different to that reported in ram or bull semen. pH values of fresh ejaculated rabbit semen are alkaline. The periods from semen ejaculation till freezing affect on semen freezability. The present study aimed to evaluate three different semen extender pH values and equilibration periods on freezability of rabbit semen. Semen samples were collected from 5 New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit bucks using an artificial vagina. Semen samples with more than 70 % motility were pooled and diluted using Tris- based extender with three different pH values 7.0, 7.2 or 7.4. Diluted semen samples were cooled to 5 oC through 0.5 an hour then kept for 0.5, 1 or 2 hours as equilibration periods. The frozen –thawed spermatozoa were incubated at 37°C and their motility was recorded each hour. The 7.2 pH extender with 0.5 an hour as equilibration period at 5 oC. gave the highest post freezing results. Whereas the highest averages of post-thaw motility and motility after 4 hours of incubation were 49.5 . and 19.50 % respectively. The sperm cells recovery averaged 62.8 and 24.7 % in the same order. The differences in post – thaw motility due to pH extenders and periods of equilibration times were significant. All possible kind of interactions were statistically insignificant. The experiment recommends using tris-egg yolk extender with 7.2 pH value and half an hour equilibration period at 5 oC. to freeze rabbit semen.
