It is well known that ethylene is produced during the growth of plantlets in tissue culture flasks. Ethylene has hormonal effects as it sometimes promote shoot or embryo formation, but long period contact with the growing tissue may have an inhibitory effect. The ethylene levels were dependent on the type of auxin. Higher ethylene levels were associated with 2,4 -D and NAA at 1.5 mg/l respectively, while IAA had little effect on ethylene production at the same concentration treatment. Positive correlation was found between ethylene content in vessels environment and regeneration capacity of Asparagus callus culture. Promoted callus formation and inhibited differentiation in small tissue culture vessels was related significantly to high ethylene content of vessels atmosphere.
