520 | _aWaste vegetable oils (WVO) can be transestrified to biodiesel for use as an alternative diesel fuel. You don't have to convert the engine to run it on biodiesel. The essential part of the process is the transesterification of waste vegetable oil with methano', in the presence of a catalyst, to yield the methyl ester of waste vegetable oil as a product and glycerin as a by-product. Experiments have been performed to deter-mine the optimum conditions for the preparation of biodiesel. The process varieties were. 1) oil to methanl ratio, 2) temperature 3) catalyst, 4) stirring time. The optimum conditions were: 1) oil to methanol ratio 5: 1 2) temperature of WVO 50°C. 3) the optimum amount of catalyst was 9.5 gm of sodium hydroxide to one liter of WVO gave a maximum conversion. 4) extremely vigorous agitation was not necessary after the reaction mixture became homogeneous (60 minute). Viscosity, viscosity index, cetane number pour point etc. of the biodiesel and WVO were measured. Engine tests have been carried out with the aim of measurements of torque, speed. fuel consumption, and compare the behavior of a diesel engine running on biodiesel with diesel fuel as a baseline. Fuel consumption was almost the same for diesel and biodiesel. Cost for the commercial production of biodiesel was found to be 0.53 LElliter at 20 % of biodiesel to diesel fuel. Costs are in 2003 Egyptian pound. | ||
