Subject(s): Online resources: In: Alexandria journal of agricultural research 2008 v. 53 (1)Summary: Oil extracts of castor bean and colocynth seeds in addition to spongy bulb powder of colocynth were extracted by methanol and acetone to give methanolic and acetone extracts. The extracts were tested against the early fourth instar larvae of mosquito (Culex pipiens L.); land snails (Thepo pisana); four fungi (Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseoli, Fusarium calmarum and Pythium debarianum) and on the root and shoot systems of squash and wheat seedlings. The extracts of methanolic colocynth seeds, acetone castor bean seeds, methanolic castor bean seeds and acetone colocynth seeds caused LC₅₀ values equal 77. 160, 210 and 420 ppm, respectively against C. pipiens. All the tested extracts were found to be slight to weak affected T. pisana. Methanolic extract of castor beon seeds exhibited high fungicidal activity against F. calmarum and P.debarionum with IC₅₀ values equal 900 and 940 ppm, respectively. whereas its acetone extract caused IC₅₀ equals 860 ppm against F. calmarum.
