Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is one of the most effective organophosphorus insecticides extensively used in Egypt and worldwide. In the present work, the cytotoxic effect of chlorpyrifos on rat liver was examined and the ability of this potent organophosphorus comporund to induce oxidative stress was investigated as well. Adult male rats orally received daily doses of chlorpyrifos (2.9 and 11.6 mg I kg body weight) for 28 consecutive days. Cholinesterase (ChE), alaninaminotransferase (ALT), aspartataminotransferase (AST) activities, glucose, total protein and albumin contents were estimated in the plasma while, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) level, Glutathion·S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were detennined in the liver; The current results revealed significant decrease in the activities of the plasma CHE & ALT enzymes as well as albumin level. On the other hand, a significant increase was recorded in plasma AST activity and glucose level throughout the experiment.
