A computer model was developed to simulate surface and subsurface drip irrigation systems. The model combines the alternate direction implicit method (ADI) of solving two dimensional linear partial differential equations with the iterative Newton-Raphson method to advance through variable time steps. After each time step, a volume balance is applied to avoid error accumulation. Several techniques were selected to harmonize the auxiliary equations in the model. Cubic splines were used to smooth the diffusivity. A non pivoting technique was used to solve banded and tridiagonal matrices. The model was developed using visual basic for applications (VBA) computer language which runs under Office environment. The model was named "Drip Chartist", and it was verified to run efficiently under any construction alternative of the drip irrigation, and under any soil texture.
