Detection of epistasis has been recognized as important genetic factors for economic traits. Because epistatic variance can shift to additive variance under inbreeding, also it contributes to heterosis in crossbreeding. The presence of epistasis was examined using statistical genetic analysis of three way crosses of Matrouh with each of Silver Montazah, Mandarah, Inshas, Lohman Selected Leghorn (LSL) and Lohman Brown (LB). The current results revealed that additive x additive (I) type of epistatic effects were present in the inheritance of egg number and egg mass at 90 d. of laying and egg number, egg weight and egg mass at 52 wks. of laying. Whilst, the dominance components of genetic variance (σ²d) were larger than additive (σ²A) for egg mass at 90 d. of laying, egg number and egg weight at 240 d. of laying, egg number and egg weight at 52 wks. of laying. Moreover, the ratio between dominance and additive mean squares (ĥ) indicated that the traits egg number and egg weight at 90 d. of laying, egg mass at 240 d. of laying and at 52 wh. of laying showed importance of both additive and dominance properties of gene, since the ĥ was almost equal of unity. While, the traits egg mass at 90 d. of laying, egg number and egg weight at 240 d. of laying, egg number and egg weight at 52 wks. of laying were predominantly affected by over dominance, since the estimates of ĥ were found to be higher than unity. Also, further discussion of the results of heterosis percentages revealed that the three way cross Mandarah with Matrouh with Lohman Brown (Mn x Mt x LB) showed the' highest heterotic effects for egg number at 90 d. and 52 wks. of laying. While, the three way cross Silver Montazah wilh Matrouh with Lohman Selected Leghorn (SM x Mt x LSL) had the highest heterosis percentages for egg weight and egg mass at all periods studied. Therefore, it is more valuable to select these promising genotypes and attempt the three way crosses in future poultry breeding programs to improve annual egg production yield.
