Breeding high yielding rice varieties is the main objective of the rice-research program in Egypt. In 'addition to improved yield, these varieties must possess other desirable characters such as earliness, lodging tolerance, improved plant type, resistance to diseases and insects, tolerance to adverse conditions (salinity, alkalinity, drought.... etc) and superior grain quality. In 1988, the rice variety Giza 175 was developed and diStributed as a new improved variety characterized with most of the reqUired characters except some cooking and eating quality characters such as high amylose content and hard gel consistency.
