This Investigation was conducted in Calcareous soils at Maryut experimental station, Desert Research Center during two summer seasons, 200 1 and 2002 to study the effect of some folier application treatments and different seed hardening treatments on growth traits, yield and yield components as well as the biochemical cori1pQJ1Cnts Of vernonia (Vernonia galfl11lensis P.). A split plot design with three replicates was carried Out. The main plots were devoted at random for three foliar application treatments, i.e. H3PO4. (0.2 %), MnSO4 (2%) and tap water as control and three seed hardening treatments i.e. tap water, GA3 (2ooppm), TDZ (5pPb) and dry seed " control in the sub plots. Generally, growth traits, yield and its Components of Vernonia galamensis were significantly increased with different foliar application treatments. Also, application of H3po4 0.2 % surpassed the other foliar treatments in yield and Its components. Moreover, growth traits, yield and its components of vernonia were significantly increased by application of seed hardening treatments as compared with 41)' seeds as a control. The best seed hardening treatment was GA3 (200ppm), in respect of . plant height, No. of brancbes/plant. fresh and dry weights/plant as well as No. of Bowers /plant. Photosynthetic pigments. protein and total carbohydrates content "ere significantly . increased by using 4ift'erent foliar application treatments as compared with the control. Also. proline content and mioneral contents exhibited the same trend with different foliar application treatments. Furthermore. seed hardening treatments exhibited positive effect on all biochemical components of vernonia. Meanwhile GA3 (200ppm) treatment recorded the highest significant values.
