Subject(s): Online resources: In: Egyptian Journal of Plant Breeding 2003.v.7(1), Special issue.Part-1Summary: Combining ability analysis was practiced in F2, of 8 x 8 diallel set for grain yield and four of its attributes in bread wheat under two irrigation treatments (stress irrigation and normal irrigation). The variances associated with general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant for all traits recorded in both irrigation treatments as well as the combined analysis indicating that additive and additive x additive types of gene action were more important then non additive genetic effeets for these traits. Sham 6 (P4.) was the best combiner for no. of kernels/spike under irrigation and the combined analysis; l00ll-kemel weight in normal irrigation. The parent P6. (Sk 8) gave significantly positive gi effects for grain yield in stress irrigation and in the combined analysis. The parent SK 69 (P8 was the best combiner for grain yield in both irrigation and the combined analysis. Six F, hybrids expressed signirlcantly positive Sy effects for grain yield in both irrigations as weD as the combined analysis P1 x P5, P2 X P3, P2 X P7, P3 X P4, P4 X P8 and P6 X P8. Application of the drought stress susceptibility index (DSI) over both irrigation treatments (stress and normal irrigations) indicated that P2, P4, P5 and P6 as well as 16 crosses had low susceptibility index of stress irrigation. The best hybrids were P1 x P2, P1 x P7, P2 x P5, P3 x P7 and P6 x P8. The varianee associated with general and specific combining ability was highly significant for all traits of stress susceptibility index. The parents P2, P6 and P8 gave significant negative values for grain yield and most studied traits. The parent p. showed a significant negative value for no. of spikes/plant and 1000-kemel weight of DSI. The crosses P1 x P2, P2 x P4, P3 x P4, P3 x P6, P3 x P8, P6 x P8 and P7 x P6, exhibited significantly negative Sij for grain yield of drought susceptibility index.
