The present study is important since it is dealing with biological control of the onion white rot disease caused by Sclerotium cepivorum using local microbial antagonists at the Nile-Delta of Egypt. Microorganisms isolated from the rhizosphere-soil of healthy onion plants antagonized the most aggressive pathogenic isolate obtained from Negrig at El-Gharbia governorate. The most effective antagonistic isolates were identified as Trichoderma harzianum, T. lignorum, BaCillus subtilis and B. pumilus. Trichodrma isolates grew over and parasitized S. cepivorum and coiling phenomenon was microscopically observed. Culture filtrates of Trichodrma and Bacillus isolates inhibited the linear growth, production and germination of sclerotia of S. cepivorum. Pot and field experiments proved the ability of the tested antagonists to control the onion white rot disease and to improve plant growth parameters and yield of bulbs.
