Agricultural production in Egypt is limited by urban encroachment and soil salinity. On the other hand, continuous reclamation efforts in the desert and coastal regions succeeded in establishing new agricultural communities and increased the area of cultivated land and the amount of final product in the last two decades. Land use/land cover change particularly that of agriculture and new reclaimed areas have been occurring at an unprecedented rate and scale in east of Nile delta. The rapid rate of economic development, demographics and poverty are believed to be the underlying forces responsible for the change. Accurate and up-to-date information to support the above statement is needed. The overall goal of this paper is to monitor the major land cover types and identify areas undergoing major land cover (agriculture areas), in east of Nile Delta.
