Subject(s): Online resources: In: Minufiya Journal of Agricultural Research 2002. v.27(3)Summary: Two experiments were carried out at the experimental farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Shebin El-Kom, to evaluate the 25 clonal lines in 1996 and 1997 and the second one at Barrage Experimental Station of Horticulture Research Institute, to evaluate 25 F1 hybrids and their parental lines for studying the heterosis effect in sweet potato concerning some plant and tuber root characters. Three cultivars, i.e., "925", Jwewl and Mabrouka were used as control. The data obtained could be summarized as follows : 1- Of the 25 F1 crosses studied in the first season, only three crosses showed hybrid vigour, dominante effect also was observed in this trait in some crosses. 2- Hybrid vigour (over dominance) for the large area was detected in 21 crosses and 6 F1 hybrids during the first and second season, respectively. 3- For plant vigour, all studied crosses reflected dominance towards the high plant vigour, when the average degree of heterosis was estimated based on MP value, except the two hybrids 55 x 171/4 and 55 x 210/2 in the first and second season, respectively. It is noticed that in both seasons, the superior crosses which showed over dominance for plant vigour showed also, over dominance for number of branches and leaf area, indicating that this characters are the main compounds of plant vigour and effect in this trait.
