Subject(s): Online resources: In: The bulletin. Faculty of Agriculture. Cairo University 2009.v.60(4)Summary: While looking for the toxic principle of Astragalus kahiricus DC, a herb highly toxic In livestock especially in small ruminants, hypaphorinc, the N,N,N-trimethyl tryptophan betaine was isolated. This alkaloid was identified in AstragaLus kahiricus, using NMR and MS methods. It was synthesized in sufficient amount and tested for potential toxicity in mice and Iambs. In this study it is shown, with good evidence, thaI hypaphorine could not be held responsible for Astragalus kahiricus poisonings in small ruminants.
