Sakha 101 was developed from a cross between Giza 176 and Milyang 79. Segregating generations were selected at both International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, and Rice Research and Training Center (RRTCj, Egypt. In 1992, the line GZ 4596-3-4-2 was selected and promoted for yield in test program experiments from 1993 up to 1997 conducted at several research stations; Sakha, Gemmiza, Zarzoura (normal soil), and 5irw (saline soil) to test the line adaptability.
